“It’s not shopping, it’s retail therapy.”

“I shop, therefore I am.”

“When I die, bury me at the mall, so my wife will come to visit me.” — Despite all the jokes like this, for too many people shopping is anything but a joking matter.

“It’s not shopping, it’s retail therapy.”

“I shop, therefore I am.”

“When I die, bury me at the mall, so my wife will come to visit me.”

Despite all the jokes like this, for too many people shopping is anything but a joking matter. This was the message of our March 27 teleclass with Dr. April Benson. She is a nationally known psychologist who specializes in the treatment of compulsive buying disorder. Click here for more...

Rick Kahler has long pioneered explorations into our financial interiors. An extraordinary collaborator, his weekly blogs are models of insight and brutal honesty. This week’s article focuses upon a recent telecast with Dr. April Benson (www.stoppingovershopping.com). In non-technical terms, this article describes both symptoms and issues involved in using (“abusing”??) the shopping experience as a form of habitual self-medication. This is good, solid, “out of the ordinary” material. Dr. Benson suggests that research shows that six to ten percent of Americans are compulsive shoppers. In other words, this issue is of no small concern. They have much to say about the “why’s” and “how’s.” This is heartily recommended as an introduction to more detailed resources.
